HTC One V: A quick review

Hi there, this is Aryansh and in this post I'm gonna be reviewing the HTC One V.

Previously I have reviewed the HTC One X and in this post I'm gonna review it's little brother, the HTC One V. This phone is a great option for people who want a phone of a good brand as well as good features in a limited budget. Read More to find out the pros and cons of this phone.

HTC, in this phone, has shown it's primitive, well built heavy design in this phone. This phone truly looks like the Old HTC phones which used to be heavy and thick. Although, it has the primitive HTC look, it does pack the features of today.

The first thing I'd like to tell you about is the phone's display. The phone's screen size is almost equal to 4-inch, it has a 3.7-inch screen. The display is a Super LCD2 one and I'm quite disappointed about the fact that it is not an IPS screen. But still it has a good viewing angle, I would not say that it is very good, but it does the job. The resolution of the screen is 480X800 pixels and it has a pixel density of 252 ppi. Due to it's high pixel density we don't see and little pixels when we see the screen closely.

The phone has a very nice built quality. The back, I believe, is made out of poly-carbonate which some people may perceive as Aluminum because of it's nice touch and feel. Also, the phone doesn't seem to have any protection on the screen like corning gorilla glass or anything like the. So I think it'll scratch up pretty quick if you don't use a nice quality screen guard.

There is one big con with this phone which may be a problem for some people who have the Auto-Brightness feature always enabled on their phone and are big fan of that. This phone does not include a Light sensor. There is just a proximity sensor and an accelerometer.

The phone is not weighty but it feels like so due to it's, I would say, "awkward" design. The phone weighs just 115g but it gives a feel of a 150g or 180g phone. It also doesn't fit well in your pocket if you are wearing tight jeans or if you keep it in the back pocket of your pants or jeans. This is due to the hockey-stick-like design of this phone. I  don't now why HTC has done that.

The phone comes pre-loaded with the Android version 4.0.3 i.e ICS and it has the HTC Sense version 4 which is nice. The phone has the multitouch functionality which is helpful in gaming and all that.
Till date, HTC has not announced any firmware update for this phone but we are expecting a Jelly Bean update soon.

The phone has the beats audio enhancement which we are seeing a lot in high-end HTC phones these days and even after this HTC ships the normal HTC earphones with this thing but if you attach some other earphones or headphones with this device, we see a change in sound quality after enhancing it with beats audio.

Another big con with this phone is that, it only has 4 GB of storage out of which 1 GB is available to us for other activities. And this is the reason why other phones of competition overshadow this one.
Although, we can add a microSD card and expand the storage up to 32 GB. The phone has a RAM of 512 MB, which is quite disappointing because, out of that 512 MB, the phone uses about 300 MB of RAM and we're left with only 200 MB of storage.
This issue can be solved if we root this phone but I don't really recommend doing that.

The connectivity options that we get on this phone are: Bluetooth, GPRS, EDGE, WLAN(Wi-Fi).
Here's another con of this phone. This phone doesn't support the DLNA, and this is a major con for those people who like to keep their music and other media stored on their home network. Also, this phone doesn't support the "a" type of connection in the Wi-Fi, which, I don't think so, would be a problem.

The Wi-Fi reception of this phone is great but when it comes to rendering web pages, I doesn't stand to my expectations. The browsing or surfing experience is a bit choppy to my liking, and I guess it's because of that immediate text reflow functionality that we have seen in the HTC One X.

The camera on this phone is just OK. Unlike the HTC One X, this phone won't serve you as a compact camera. It is just a standard 5 MP camera. We do get the autofocus, LED flash and touch focus functionality with this and the touch focus seems quick but technically it takes half a second to focus, yeah, it is fast, but not that fast, you know, like blazingly fast. The camera does support recording videos at 720p HD but I don't yet know the fps at which it records those. I believe it to be 23 fps as this is a single core phone which I'll be taking about later. The major con in the camera section is that it doesn't include a secondary camera, i.e a front facing camera.

The phone has a single-core 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, which is by Qualcomm. This too is a major con of the phone(yes, the phone is full of cons). Although, even after this, I didn't find any lag except for the browsing one.
The phone has a GPU and it is a Adreno 205 GPU, The GPU is quite simple, it just runs simple games, you won't be able to run heavy games and all that stuff.

There is a GPS with A-GPS support but it lacks GLONASS and I really don't expect that much from a phone in this range.

The phone is available in two colours, a black one and a brown one. I would suggest you to buy the black one as the brown one gets faded or I shall say abraded after some time use whereas the black one doesn't.

The last, the battery. The battery on this phone is a 1500mAh Li-ion battery and it goes one for about a day in normal usage. If you run apps or something, that comes down to half a day. And yeah, it is quite disappointing.

That's it for now...
