HTC One S: A quick review

Hi there, this is Aryansh and in this post I'm gonna be reviewing the HTC One S.

Many people think that these series of phones are superior to each other in their alphabetical order. For Example: One X is superior than One V.
But this isn't true in all cases. Read more to find out.

Previously I have reviewed both, it's big brother, the HTC One X and it's little brother, the HTC One V. And this phone lies between both the phones, it is like HTC One X > HTC One S > HTC One V. The phone is feature packed and it is available in two versions. The international version and the Indian version.
I'll be talking about the difference in the Indian version at the end of this post. And there is not one but two differences.

The first thing I'd like to talk about is the display of this phone. The display has been improved in this phone, I'm not talking about the size of the display, but, the material of the screen here. The screen on this phone is a Super AMOLED* screen and it is a 4.3-inches screen which has a resolution of 540X960 pixels, which is quite rare, it is also called qHD, which stands for quarter-HD. The pixel density of this phone is 256 ppi and it is quite high on this screen size.
The screen is protected by the corning gorilla glass which should protect the phone from minor scratches and all that.

The phone only accepts a micro-SIM and you need to have a micro-SIM to make voice calls and all that. The phone has 3G video and voice calling facility too, which is quite apparent.

There are three touch sensitive buttons in the front which we generally see in Android phones running ICS i.e version 4.0.

The phone comes with Android version 4.0 and HTC has announced that it'll give a Jelly Bean update so there is really no need for you to root it and get that jelly bean thing. Also, the phone is very, very smooth and I haven't seen any lag or got any complaints from anyone about the same.

Again, HTC has chosen not to provide any Card Slot which means that we can't extend our storage and we get 16 GB of storage from HTC but when we first boot up the phone we get the option of 25 GB of Dropbox Cloud storage free for 2 years(I don't know what will happen to the user after two years. Hehe!).
Out of that 16 GB of internal storage we only get about 10 GB of storage for other stuff the rest 6 GB is for apps and things that the phone uses for itself. It also has 1 GB of RAM which is quite nice and I didn't face any problem while multitasking with this phone.

Coming to the processor. This phone has a Dual-Core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon s4 processor* which is on the Krait architecture which is much better that the old Scorpion architecture that we have seen in the Snapdragon s3. The difference in this s4 Snapdragon is that, it uses a 28 nanometer process and due to that it provides more scope for overclocking the processor(smaller transistors mean more scope for overclocking). The Krait architecture supports the dual channel memory which makes everything a lot more faster and smoother.

The GPU on this phone is a Adreno 225* GPU which is great in performance, and runs most of the high-end games without any lag or something.

The connectivity options that we get with this phone are: Bluetooth, GPRS, EDGE, WLAN(Wi-Fi).
And this phone has got the DLNA functionality which allows you to sync your music and stuff like that with your other DLNA enabled devices.

Coming down to the camera. This phone boasts a very great quality camera and it is a 8 Mega Pixels shooter and the colour quality, I have to say, is very nice. And one that I was amazed to see is that, the colour quality was even better than the Samsung Galaxy S3! The S3's colours appeared a little faded as compared to the HTC One S! It was even better than it's big brother, the HTC One X. The colours appear very vivid in this phone. It does have the autofocus and touch focus functionality which is very apparent and that it has LED flash too.
The phone also supports video recording at full HD resolution, which is 1080p and that too at 30 fps which is greater than the One X. The colours in the video were also very great and we do get that snapshot feature which lets you take shots while recording a video.

The phone has two microphones, one is the major one and the other is used for active noise cancellation. It also records sound in stereo while video recording which we have seen in the HTC One X but I believe that the reception has been improved in this HTC One S. I don't know whether they have truly done that or not. But I found the sound to be more qualitative as well as quantitative when is comes to the volume.

There is also a secondary, front-facing, camera in this phone which can be used for video calls and it is a VGA camera. It sucks!

There is GPS on this phone with A-GPS support but there is no GLONASS. I don't find the need of GLONASS that much because the accuracy that this GPS gives is more than enough for normal usage.

It also has the beats audio enhancement which works with any other headphones and provides more depth in sound, which means bass. The bass increases a lot if you use the beats audio headphones. the original ones by Dr.Dre.

The last, the battery. Here comes the con of this phone. the battery of this phone isn't replaceable and it is a 1650mAh battery. The con is that it is a Li-Po battery and I have stated the harmful affects of this kind of battery in my HTC One X review in bold letters.

Note to Indian buyers:
The first thing is that this phone comes with a 1.7 GHz processor in India with the s3 Snapdragon processor and I have stated the bad qualities of the s3 above in this post. Plus, the phone heats up in the Indian version and it also consumes 10-15% more battery because of the s3 Snapdragon.

Another thing is that, in India it comes with a Adreno 220 GPU whereas in the international market it sells with the Adreno 225 GPU. So, I suggest Indian buyers to buy it from Amazon from the US. The version with the warranty would be $35 more and it is really value for money.
These two are the differences in the Indian version and these are not small issues. You can't overlook them.

Another thing is that HTC has put in a Super AMOLED screen in this phone which is a signal that HTC would be producing more phones with the Super AMOLED display.

That's it for now...
