Hi there, this is Aryansh and in this post I'm gonna be reviewing the Google Nexus 7.
This is a budget Android tablet from Google and has all the features needed in a tablet. It is a true tablet with the functionalities that only a tablet should have. Read more to find out.
This is the first tablet by Google and it is truly a tablet. It gives the word "tablet" it's true meaning. Yes, it won't work as a phone. This is also the first tablet in the world to ship with Android Jelly Bean i.e version 4.1.x. It is manufactured by ASUS for Google currently.
The first thing that I'd like to tell you about is the display of this tablet. The display of this tablet is simply amazing. It has a 7-inch display with a resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels. The screen is LED-backlit IPS LCD and it has a viewing angle of 178-degrees which is amazing and that has been made possible because it is an IPS grade display. It has a pixel density of 216 ppi which is quite goos in my opinion as this tablet is not costly at all. The protection provided is Corning Fit Glass which should save it from many scratches but I suggest that you should use a screen guard.
This is really a budget tablet but it packs all the features of a high-end tablet. It sells in US for $199 for the 8 GB one and $249 for the 16 GB one. It is available in only one colour and that is Black.
This tablet is not too heavy, and nor too light. It just weighs 340g and it doesn't feel much heavy. Actually it feels like 150g when you hold it. It is just 10.5 mm thick which is very nice.
On the front it doesn't have any buttons at all. All the Android buttons are touch and they are in the screen.
The tablet does support multitouch functionality, which is for gaming and all that stuff like that.
Also, you can't expand the storage of this phone. You can use the cloud services like Dropbox and all but you can't expand the storage anyhow. It doesn't have any card slot. It has 1 GB of RAM. In the 8 GB version you only get access to 5.5 GB of space the other is used for various other things including apps. So I strongly suggest you to buy the 16 GB model.
The built quality of this phone is very nice. Unlike Samsung, it has that textured back and because of that it is very comfortable to hold in your hands and that is the main reason you feel that it is light. The back has a rubberized finish to it, but is actually a good grade of plastic.
Coming down to the CPU and GPU. The Google Nexus 7 sports a Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset and the processor is a Quad-Core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A9 processor. And man, this processor can even win over a 1.7 GHz Dual-Core processor. The processor is very powerful and it runs every thing very smooth, smooth as satin. The tablet is very zippy and snappy.
The GPU is ULP GeForce GPU and that is by Nvidia. The GPU is very powerful it can play all the games available on the Google Play. I have played many heavy games with this and had no problem at all. It is a 12 core GPU! The Nenamark Score is always above 55 fps.
The typing on this tablet is very easy as it has that stock Android touch keyboard which has very large keys on it.
This tablet ships with the Android Jelly Bean v4.1.1 and it is upgradeable to v4.1.2 and it is a very minor update, it is just about 32 MB but after installing this update it lets you change the orientation of the home screen which was a problem for some people, including me.
The big advantage of this tablet is that, you can get all the Android updates as soon as Google releases them as this is a Google tablet.
There is a camera in this tablet and that is a front-facing camera. Google has decided not to put a rear-facing camera. And even if Google did put a rear- facing camera, the tablet would have been a lot more expensive. The front facing camera is a 1.2 Mega-pixels shooter and it can also record video in 720p HD which is nice for video calls. Sadly, there is no camera app in the tablet but you can get one from the play store.
The connectivity options that we get on this tablet are: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC. One big con with this tablet is that it doesn't have the DLNA functionality which maybe a big problem for people who like to keep their music and other multimedia files synced like a cloud over the devices they have. But not to worry, you can always use any cloud storage functionality for the same and I'd prefer using Google Drive.
The last, the battery. The battery on this tablet is a Li-ion 4325 mAh battery. In spite of the fact that the mAh rating on this tablet is quite high, it just has around 8 hours of battery life. This is very ideal as we don't use our tablets 24 x 7 unless and until we're out somewhere or in special cases, have sold the computer to buy a tablet. Haha!
That's it for now...
