Apple iPod Touch 5th Generation: A quick review

Hi there, this is Aryansh and in this post I'm gonna be reviewing the new Apple iPod Touch i.e 5th generation.

The first iPod Touch was released on September 5th, 2007 and that was a boom! Everybody was mad after it and everybody wanted to use it. There were long lines people seen in front of Apple Stores. Now, after the death of Steve Jobs, there is something different in their products, or actually, many things. Read More to know about this iPod Touch.

This iPod was released on 15th October, 2012 and since then, I don't know how many have bought this. Almost everything has been changed since Steve Jobs death and this is one of the things.

Display

The first thing I'd like to talk about is the display. The display is not the same as it was before. Not only it is taller, it is better. The screen on this iPod is a 4-inch screen 640 x 1136 pixels which sure is an HD display. And I've got to tell you that pixel density on this thing is really high. It has a pixel density of 326 ppi which beats everything available in the market right now. They have also improved the Aspect Ratio of the screen, it is now 9:16. You won't see any square-boxed videos now. It has retina display, which is quite apparent as it is an Apple product. The technology used in this is IPS LCD and you don't have to care about the viewing angles, view it from anywhere, it'll be the same. It has the multitouch functionality which is helpful in gaming and all that. The protection offered is Corning Gorilla Glass and Oleophobic coating which makes it fingerprint resistant and scratch proof.

Hardware

When it comes to Hardware, this is the thinnest music player that comes to my mind. This iPod is just 6.1 mm thick which can roughly be quoted as half-a-cm. This thing is obviously fit for your pocket and it is very light too, this thing just weighs 88 g!

Storage

When it comes to storage, Apple never gives any card slot and nor will it do such an awful thing. This iPod comes in only two variants, 32 GB and 64 GB. There isn't any difference in the hardware of both the variants but the storage.
The RAM in both the variants is just double of what we got in the previous generation, it is 512 MB. I believe that multitasking would be a lot more smoother in this and heavy games and apps should run smoothly. Even the browser should work very smoothly.

Connectivity

The connectivity options that we get with this are: WLAN(Wi-Fi), Bluetooth(4.0), DLNA.
The Wi-Fi that we get on this available in all type of connections, i.e, 802.11 b/g/n. The Wi-Fi reception on this music player is supposed to be very good.
It also has this Digital Living Network Alliance service, i.e, DLNA. That should enable you to sync all your music and multimedia files on this.

Camera

This iPod can be easily used as a compact camera for which Apple has provided the loop. I'll talk about the loop later. The primary camera on this iPod is a 5 Mega-pixels shooter, but don't misjudge it. This iPod can be used as a compact camera and the depth in the pictures that we get is excellent and I have to tell you, I didn't see a single grain of noise in the picture samples that I have seen, the camera is just amazing. It does have the autofocus and touch focus functionality which we didn't see in the previous version, i.e, iPod 4th Generation. There is a LED flash also which should let you take great shots even in the night.
The rear-facing camera is capable of recording 1080p full HD at 30 fps. This thing is quite amazing as even the video samples aren't grainy at all, in the previous iPod 720p recording sucked like hell! But in this version of Apple's iPod, it is not the same anymore.
There is a secondary, front-facing, camera which records video at 720p which ideal for video calls and I haven't seen any samples or tested this front-facing camera but it should be of the same quality as the rear-facing camera on the iPod touch 5th Generation. It is a 1.2 MP shooter and it records video at 30 fps.

The Loop

The loop is a new feature included by Apple in the iPod touch.  It is basically a carrying loop, you know we've seen this in most digital cameras and mobiles. It attaches at the back of iPod where there is a special momentum switch-like button which when you press, pops out and the loop attaches to it. You can carry your iPod easily in your hand with the help of this very easily now.

OS

The operating system in this is the new iOS 6 and Apple claims over 200 new features in this thing and I don't want to go in detail with that as that ride is long. The main points are Facebook, YouTube and Passbook. Apple Maps? Keep 'em aside right now.
  • Facebook has been integrated in Siri in iOS 6. This means that you can give Siri a command and it'll upload your status and all that.
  • YouTube has been removed, now you have to download it from the App Store. It is not pre-loaded anymore.
  • There is Passbook and it is a new app which manages your coupons, tickets, and other stuff like that. So everything is now digital.
Apple Maps is an entirely different subject which I'll talk about in a separate post.

Internal Stuff

By internal stuff I mean the processor and all. Apple has decided to put in the ARM Cortex-A9 Apple A5 Dual Core 1 GHz processor which has been underclocked by Apple and I believe that has been done in order to save battery and boast about their battery life, had it been a 1 GHz processor, it would have consumed a lot more battery than it consumes now. It has been underclocked to 800 MHz!
The GPU in this is the same that we have seen in the iPhone 4S, i.e, PowerVR SGX 543MP3 (triple-core). The GPU is very high-end and it should play all the high-end games available right now.

Battery

The last, the battery. The battery in this thing is a 1030mAh battery. It is a Li-ion battery and the mili-ampere rating on this is pretty low but still Apple claims that it'll run a long way. Apple claims that it shall run for 40 hours in audio playback and 8 hours in video playback. Sure Apple fan-boys are going to believe that but I ain't. That battery life which is claimed is fake! You get this much of battery life when you just play music and nothing else. The 8 hours that you see is when you run 240p videos! Haha! Nice try Apple!

Sensor Problem

There is a big con in this generation of iPod. The ambient light sensor is missing. I don't know why Apple decided not to put in the ambient light sensor in this thing. This might be a problem for people who like the auto brightness functionality. I don't think that the screen would be visible under sunlight.

That's it for now....
